PRESTON

The tension in the bar gave me a headache. It pulsed between my shoulder blades and ran up my neck. I rubbed my temples, trying to rub the pain away, but I knew it wasn’t going anywhere—not with so much going on. In the far reaches of my mind, I felt Ciara. She wasn’t trying to poke or prod me, nor was she trying to soothe me. I didn’t want her to. The fact that she’d directly disobeyed my order to stand down irked me.

She was at the far end of the bar, coddling Colleen with Ella and Sam as Torque and Hatchett sat at the other end, closer to the door. It was strange to know that only last night our two packs had been united, now the rift between us strained the plans. How could I trust them if they didn’t respect us?

“What else do you know about the compound in the woods?” I heard Ciara asking Colleen as I moved to the booth to sit next to Ciara while keeping an eye on the Steel Lycans.

“You okay?” I asked Colleen.

She shrugged. “It’s been a long day.”

“Don’t worry about the Steel Lycans,” I said. “They won’t touch you. I won’t allow it.”

“I know,” she said as she glanced to Ciara. “But I deserve everything they want to throw at me.”

“No, you don’t,” Ciara said as she pulled Colleen closer to her. “You can’t live in the past. You’ve got to learn to forgive yourself and move on.”

“Look, you don’t judge all humans based off a few bad ones,” I said. “And you can’t do that with shifters, either. I’ve run the Steel Lycans out of Moon Valley before, and if I think you’re in danger, I’ll do it again.”

“Thanks,” Colleen said as she flashed a weak smile.

“So, the compound,” Ciara said, redirecting the conversation. “What do you know about it?”

“The compound is surrounded by four levels of security,” she said as she moved the map Ella had brought and pointed out the area. “From what I’ve heard, your encounter happened here,” she said. “It’s the nets. There are at least fifty laid out in the area. The next level is the fog.”

“How do we get around it?” I asked.

“The best way is to trigger them to go off and wait. The fog won’t be able to last for more than five minutes. They aren’t plugged into any power source or piping. They’re more like aerosol cans with a finite amount. Once the fog clears, you’ll be able to get to the side doors,” Colleen said.

“And what can we expect there?” I asked as I leaned over the table to get a better look.

Colleen swallowed hard and cleared her throat. “The doors will most likely be laced with the Corpse Lily. There are fog devices there as well. Those will be attached to piping, and there’s no telling how much fog they have stored in the basement to unleash. I’m guessing it’s a minimal supply since they tried to clear the forest with it before, but I can’t say for sure.
